Which Canadian citizenship documents and forms do you need?

Choose proof, adoption, or record search first, then collect the civil, status, historical, and physical-presence evidence for that process.

Which records should you collect?

Choose the route first. A proof application, adoption grant, citizenship-record search, and ordinary naturalization do not use the same evidence plan.

Start with whether a qualifying parent was Canadian at the person's birth. Then prove the parent's exact citizenship basis, effective date, and legal parent-child link.

What is in the proof package?

IRCC's live citizenship-certificate package points applicants to:

Do not rely on a stored PDF revision or old address. Download the forms from the official pages on filing day.

Which civil and status records matter?

Build a route-first chronology with:

Canada has no single federal civil registry. Use the Statistics Canada directory to find the provincial or territorial issuing authority.

Use the IRCC citizenship-record search when you need to locate a citizenship or naturalization file.

A search result is not proof of current citizenship. It cannot replace a certificate for passport purposes.

For historical research, Library and Archives Canada has naturalization lists and genealogy resources. Not every person appears, and wives or minor children may have derivative entries.

What if 1,095 days may apply?

Use the current CIT 0555 page. Prepare a day ledger for the same claimed Canadian parent and stop at the birth or adoption date.

Support it with passports, travel records, employment, education, residential, and government records. Do not pool parents. Do not count post-event days. Do not treat residence, taxes, property, or employment as automatic physical presence.

Every connection calculation needs manual review.

What does a foreign-adoption file need?

Use IRCC's current adopted-person package, not CIT 0001 alone.

The process has Part 1 and Part 2. Collect the final adoption order, legal-compliance and recognition records, relationship evidence, the adoptive parent's citizenship basis, and any required pre-adoption presence evidence.

For an adoption at age 18 or older, include evidence that the genuine parent-child relationship existed before age 18 and at adoption.

What should you verify on filing day?

Check the current:

Do not treat a displayed processing time as a guarantee. This guide does not state a fixed time or attest a saved PDF version.

What should you do next?

Make a table with one row per legal fact and one official record that could prove it. Request only records that answer a route question.

If a return or refusal already exists, preserve the full notice and read the refusal and deadline guide before refiling.

Document and form questions

Which proof forms should I check?
The live proof package links CIT 0001, CIT 0014, and CIT 0555 when the connection calculation applies. Download each form again on filing day.
Is an IRCC record search proof of citizenship?
No. A search can locate or copy a citizenship record, but it does not determine current status or replace a certificate.
Where do I order Canadian birth and marriage records?
Order them from the relevant provincial or territorial vital-statistics authority. Statistics Canada maintains the official authority directory.

The screening organizes records and possible processes. It does not replace the current IRCC checklist or an official decision.
