Simplified naturalisation through Hungarian ancestry or origin

Review Section 4(3) ancestry or origin, Hungarian language, evidence, personal filing, screening, oath, and acquisition timing.

Can you use simplified naturalisation through ancestry?

Short answer: an ascendant who was Hungarian or substantiated Hungarian origin may support Section 4(3), but demonstrated Hungarian, personal filing, the civil chain, screening, and the oath or affirmation still apply.

This is a new discretionary grant. It is not verification of citizenship held from birth.

What ancestry or origin must be shown?

Section 4(3) of Act LV of 1993 states two alternatives. The applicant may show that an ascendant was a Hungarian citizen, or substantiate origin from Hungary.

A birthplace in the former Kingdom, Hungarian surname, ethnicity, DNA result, church entry, or family story does not by itself establish either alternative. These facts can guide research. They are not a completed statutory showing.

Build the civil chain from the applicant to the person relied on. Then add citizenship records or official records that substantiate origin. Territory and sovereignty changes may require a separate historical review.

What does the Hungarian requirement mean?

The statute requires the applicant to demonstrate knowledge of Hungarian. Official mission guidance describes the check as a personal conversation during filing.

Do not rely on a promised CEFR level, a language certificate alone, a memorised script, or an interpreter as a universal substitute. The receiving official assesses the applicant's own conversation.

This requirement belongs to simplified naturalisation. It does not apply as an eligibility test to existing-status verification or a citizenship-certificate request.

What else does the route require?

The current process includes:

  1. personal filing on the current route form
  2. identity and complete civil-status evidence
  3. proof of the Hungarian-citizen ascendant or substantiated origin
  4. Hungarian-language assessment
  5. the statutory criminal and national-security conditions
  6. ministerial preparation and a discretionary presidential decision
  7. an oath or affirmation if the grant proceeds

The ordinary naturalisation residence period is not the Section 4(3) condition. That does not make the route automatic and does not remove the other requirements.

When does citizenship begin?

Citizenship is generally acquired on the oath or affirmation date. Filing, an ancestor record, or even the grant decision alone is not the acquisition date.

Timing matters for children. If a parent completes naturalisation after a child was born, that later grant normally does not turn the earlier birth into birth citizenship. Review whether a minor can be included or needs a separate process.

When should you stop for manual review?

Manual review is required where:

These issues cannot be resolved by a public score or route label.

What should you do next?

Make two evidence columns. In the first, place the complete civil chain. In the second, place proof that the relied-on ascendant was Hungarian or official records substantiating origin.

Then assess whether you can discuss your family and application independently in Hungarian before booking a personal filing appointment.
