What can a Portuguese great-grandparent change?
Short answer: a great-grandparent can identify a possible discretionary naturalization route, but not nationality of origin.
Article 6(8) of the Nationality Law republished by Organic Law 1/2026 permits the Government to naturalize a third-degree direct-line descendant of an original Portuguese citizen who has at least five years of legal residence in Portugal.
This route is always a manual-review matter.
Why is this different from the grandchild route?
A grandchild is a second-degree direct-line descendant. That person may use the separate nationality-of-origin route if every condition is proved.
A great-grandchild is a third-degree direct-line descendant. Article 6(8) places that relationship within naturalization.
The differences are practical:
- the great-grandchild route requires legal residence
- the decision is discretionary
- nationality takes effect prospectively on registration
- it does not establish nationality from birth
- it does not automatically repair nationality for children born earlier

What family status must be shown?
The Portuguese great-grandparent must have held original Portuguese nationality.
The direct chain must run through three legally established parent-child relationships to the applicant. Civil records, later corrections, adoption, and parentage judgments can raise separate legal questions.
Original nationality and non-loss should be checked in Portuguese records. A birthplace, surname, old passport copy, or family tree does not settle the issue.
What does five years of legal residence mean?
The statute requires at least five years of legal residence for this special route.
A short screening cannot determine whether the requirement is met. Exact permits, start and end dates, gaps, renewals, residence categories, and aggregation rules must be reviewed under current law and implementing rules.
Do not infer five years of legal residence from a person's present country, a tax number, property ownership, visits, or the intake answer about current residence.
Do the other naturalization conditions still apply?
Yes. Article 6(8) dispenses with the ordinary residence limb, not all other naturalization conditions.
The remaining statutory subjects include adulthood or emancipation, language, culture and history, civic knowledge, a solemn declaration, subsistence, criminal matters, security, and sanctions. The exact current wording is in article 6 of the republished law, with criminal proof wording corrected by Rectification 17/2026/1.
These subjects are not a filing checklist. Their proof methods had not been fully conformed in the Nationality Regulation at the source-check date.
Is there a dedicated form and checklist?
No verified dedicated public paper model or complete IRN checklist was found.
The gov.pt nationality service lists a great-grandchild case type. That confirms a service category, but it does not fill the procedural gap.
Do not adapt Modelo 1D or invent a four-generation checklist. Check the live IRN forms index, IRN instructions, and qualified advice before taking a filing step.
How is ordinary residence naturalization different?
Ordinary residence naturalization does not require a Portuguese ancestor.
It uses its own residence period based on the applicant's nationality category and its own statutory conditions. Residence periods, interruptions, permits, subsistence, criminal records, security, sanctions, and current proof rules all require route-specific review.
A person should not force an ordinary residence case into the great-grandchild category merely because a remote Portuguese relative exists.
What evidence subjects may need investigation?
A reviewer is likely to investigate:
- the applicant's identity and civil status
- the exact three-degree direct chain
- the ancestor's original Portuguese status
- every claimed legal-residence interval
- the remaining statutory naturalization conditions
- criminal, security, sanctions, and subsistence facts
- any parentage, adoption, name, or record conflict
